July activity

July 3, 2013

I went to the Changing Attitude meeting in Birmingham, July1st, and heard Renato Lings, PhD, linguist and scholar talk about his new book,  “Love Lost in Translation: Homosexuality and the Bible.” It has been meticulously researched and Renato takes a fresh approach, via linguistic and literary means, to the original translations of the Bible, particularly the difficult texts used to berate gay people. It was a fascinating talk and book:15 chapters, large type, all properly referenced etc. & very accessible, so I am looking forward to reading it. Renato looked at all the different translations and went back to the original, Greek, Aramaic, Hebrew finding all sorts of mistranslations that have perpetuated down the centuries and been enshrined in common (mis)understanding and church tradition. He speaks and understands many languages and talks really well too. It is shocking to think that mistakes and misunderstandings can be perpetuated as gospel truth.
